This presentation focuses on the use of Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) for both troubleshooting new construction and condition assessment of existing structures. The webinar begins with a brief introduction of different prominent NDE technologies and their principles of operation, followed by representative case studies. The case studies include examples where NDE was used to detect the extent of construction defects such as cold joints and honeycombs and application in the condition assessment of existing structures for retrofitting purposes.

Arezoo Imani is a Senior Engineer in the Lawrenceville, NJ office of WSP USA. Prior to joining WSP, she successfully established nondestructive evaluation (NDE) as a new service line for a California testing and consulting firm. She specializes in applying NDE methods to the assessment of reinforced concrete structures. Her NDE expertise includes ground penetrating radar (GPR), stress wave-based methods (impact echo, shear wave tomography, ultrasonic pulse velocity), and corrosion testing (half-cell potential and surface resistivity). She has been a project engineer and project manager for a broad range of projects, including structural condition assessment, testing and instrumentation, and forensic investigation projects. She has investigated distresses in bridges, parking garages, slabs-on-grades, historic buildings, post-tensioned concrete structures, and industrial tanks.

Dr. Imani’s interdisciplinary background includes experience as a pavement engineer for an engineering firm, a quality control engineer for a general contractor in California, and a design engineer for a car manufacturing company. Arezoo is an active member of ACI committees on Nondestructive Testing, Nondestructive Concrete Specialist Certification, and Structural Health Monitoring and Instrumentation. She was involved in high profile research projects, including the Long-Term Bridge Performance Program (LTBP) funded by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP2) study of NDE technologies for reinforced concrete bridges.

Michael C. Brown is a Senior Engineering Manager and Senior Technical Principal in the Herndon, Virginia office of WSP USA, Inc.  He serves as the firm’s U.S. Bridge Asset Management Lead, where he conducts condition evaluation and asset management of bridges and transportation structures, employing his broad knowledge of materials testing and nondestructive evaluation techniques; develops preventive maintenance, repair and rehabilitation strategies; and coordinates structural load testing and in-situ monitoring, including instrumentation and data analysis.

Michael Brown earned his BS, MS and PhD degrees in Civil Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (Virginia Tech). He is a licensed professional engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Michael Brown is an active member and Fellow of ACI, chairing the Technical Activities Committee and Concrete Bridge Design committee and member of Corrosion, Bridge Preservation and Structural Monitoring committees, the Concrete Research Council and the Board of Direction.  He chairs the Transportation Research Board standing committee on Bridge Preservation and is a member of the Structures Maintenance committee and FHWA expert task group on bridge preservation.
