re-sil-ien-cy: noun - the ability of a system to prepare for disruptive events, recover within a reasonable timeframe with minimal damage, and sometimes emerge even stronger.

Superstorm Sandy exposed many weaknesses in the northeast’s infrastructure. Parsons Brinckerhoff worked on behalf of the New York City Mayor’s Office on the Special Initiative for Rebuilding and Resiliency to provide coastal protection and transportation infrastructure recommendations to be incorporated into the report PlaNYC: A Stronger, More Resilient New York City. The report presents a summary of key developments and funding priorities in the region affected by Hurricane Sandy. Since that time, additional resiliency planning efforts have been undertaken by New York State, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and numerous other local agencies.

Massachusetts has clear needs to improve the resiliency and adaptation of its infrastructure in the face of natural disasters and other emergencies. The panel will discuss issues to address and progress to date in making these improvements into reality.
