Safety Performance is No Accident: Applying Lean Principles

Participants will learn through a case study how Lean assists with safety "basics" such as the development of safety plans and related training programs. See how Lean principles can: (1) revitalize traditional methods for staff and subcontractor safety training and education and (2) help reshape and continuously evolve best safety practices. Learn how the application of Lean tools can include safety in the overall evaluation and thus improve safety performance.
	Shaun is an experienced Director of Safety who works closely with Shawmut’s subcontractors to develop and enforce their own safety programs. He conducts 10- and 30-hour OSHA training classes as well as first aid and safety courses sponsored by the American Red Cross. Shaun believes that safety goes hand-in-hand with quality; by visiting jobsites regularly, he helps project teams build efficiently and professionally. On all Shawmut projects, Shaun ensures that all safety/health/environmental laws, codes, and regulations are followed by conducting on-site spot inspections and working closely with Project Superintendents.
	Kim’s role as Lean Manager for Shawmut Design and Construction is to implement Lean philosophy and practices in both the firm’s project delivery and internal operations, helping projects throughout New England integrate lean thinking and tools into our daily routine. A construction professional with more than ten years of experience, both hands-on in the field as a journeyman sheet metal worker, an M/E/P engineer, and a Lean Coordinator, she designs and executes continuous improvement plans to optimize quality and efficiency.
	As the Director of Lean Strategy at Consigli Construction, Cynthia is responsible for customizing the approach for Lean implementation on construction projects as well as within and across company departments. A proponent of Lean project delivery since 1997, Cynthia uses her expertise in product-process design integration to help teams improve project outcomes by efficiently using and enhancing team member capabilities as well as transforming complex design problems into ones that are easier to manage and construct.
