September Breakfast Program

To Use Design Build or Not to Use Design Build? If that is the question, what is the answer?

Design-build has become a growing alternative to the conventional design-bid-build and construction management delivery method. Today, design-build projects make up 40% of the construction market and continue to gain momentum. With this growing trend, construction managers and owners need to become familiar with the available design-build choices. In this presentation, design-build professionals will discuss the benefits and challenges of the four major variations of design-build, compared to the traditional delivery methods. This session will also provide an overview of how construction managers can act as a Prime in a contractor-led design-build scenario. Cutler Associates and The S/L/A/M Collaborative, two of the leading design-build firms in New England, will share their experiences using this delivery system. Representatives from these two unique firms will highlight the differences between their approach and process.

Rod Shaffert is the Vice President of Operations for Cutler Associates, a 44-year old design-build firm headquartered in Worcester, Massachusetts. Cutler provides integrated facility solutions to clients throughout the east coast. In his career with Cutler, Rod has served a wide variety of prior roles including project engineer, project manager, account executive, regional vice president of Cutler Florida and vice president of Cutler’s scholastic division. Rod is also a LEED accredited professional and provides leadership, within the company and on projects, for the implementation of sustainable design and construction practices. Rod earned a master’s degree in science and civil engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Eugene Torone is president of S/L/A/M Construction Services and has 30 years of experience planning and managing construction projects, including 19 years managing design-build projects. He has been responsible for the management of over 45 design-build construction projects ranging in value of up to $30,000,000. His experience includes work for educational, medical, corporate and public sector clients. He is particularly adept at devising highly effective delivery plans using innovative fast-track and design-build techniques. Mr. Torone is currently in the process of becoming a DBIA™ certified professional.
